Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving Day
Everything started with a small ship and
102 passengers, after and uncomfortable trip that lasted 66 days. They placed
anchor near the tip of Cape Cod where they later went to Mayflower across Massachusetts
Bay, where the pilgrims started to establish. During the first extreme winter
only half the original passengers survived. Later on the survivors received a
visit from an Abenaki Indian, days later the Abenaki Indian came back with
another Indian named Squanto. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by
malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees,
catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. In November 1621, after
the pilgrims first corn harvest governor William Bradford organized a celebration
known as thanksgiving. Thanksgiving didn’t become a tradition until later on
but since then people spend time with their families where they enjoy delicious
food and the company of their loved ones.
